R&A reveals new Boys Amateur format

The new year will see a new format to the Boys Amateur Championship – brining it more in line with the Amateur Championship.

The R&A has announced that competitors will now contest 36 holes of strokeplay qualifying over two courses, with just the top 64 plus ties making it through to the matchplay rounds, meaning the 2009 Boys Amateur, won by England’s Tom Lewis (pictured), will be the last in the straight matchplay format.

As a result, additional qualifying venues will be used to host two days of strokeplay competition. In 2010, this will see Irvine Golf Club share the strokeplay rounds with Kilmarnock Barassie,

Enmore Park and Burnham & Berrow Golf Clubs will play host to the earlier rounds in 2011, while 2012 will see Coxmoor share qualifying with Notts.
